ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: The diplomatic relationship between China and Liberia has witnessed robust growth, with both President Xi Jinping of China and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia maintaining regular contact through letters and other means. This continued communication provides strong strategic guidance for deepening bilateral relations.

Speaking at a reception marking the 76th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression,  held at the Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, on Sunday September 7, 2025, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Yin Chengwu, highlighted the progress of China–Liberia ties.

On behalf of the Chinese government, Ambassador Yin expressed appreciation for Liberia’s firm commitment to the One-China Principle and its support for China’s legitimate stance in international affairs.

“China supported Liberia in its bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term,” said Ambassador Yin. “We are also committed to enhancing communication and coordination with Liberia in multilateral forums. Congratulations again, Liberia, on the election!”

Ambassador Yin noted that high-level exchanges have maintained strong momentum in recent months.

In June, Liberia’s Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and Minister of Commerce and Industry Magdalene Dagoseh attended the Coordinators’ Meeting on the Implementation of the Follow-Up Actions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit and the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in Changsha.

While in China, Vice President Koung met with Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of China, marking another key bilateral exchange following the 2023 meeting between Presidents Xi and Boakai. Several other Liberian ministers and legislators also made official visits to China.

From China, Mr. Qin Weizhong, Mayor of Shenzhen, and Mr. Sang Weiliang, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial People’s Congress, visited Liberia.

“China and Liberia have maintained close exchanges on governance and development,” Ambassador Yin emphasized.

Ambassador Yin announced that China has fully implemented zero-tariff treatment for 100% of tariff lines on Liberian products, which has significantly boosted bilateral trade.

“In the first half of this year, bilateral trade in goods increased by about 30 percent,” the Ambassador disclosed.

Several joint infrastructure and development projects are currently underway, including: Two Overpass Bridges on Tubman Boulevard, Refurbishment and Expansion of the Liberia Broadcasting System, National Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Laboratory, Agricultural Machinery Modernization Project, Food Assistance Programs, Bamboo and Rattan Weaving and Vegetable Planting Projects, and Provision of Police Supplies

China and Liberia are also seeing strengthened cultural and educational ties. Since January, the Chinese Embassy has issued over 2,600 visas to Liberians, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, more than 100 Liberian students enrolled for studies in China, and over 200 professionals participated in training programs.

“Next year will be the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, and we are preparing a series of events to mark the occasion,” Ambassador Yin said. “China looks forward to hosting meaningful activities with Liberia.”

Liberian President Reaffirms Strong Ties

Also speaking at the ceremony, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai reaffirmed Liberia’s respect for the One-China Policy and its continued commitment to a foreign policy rooted in peace, mutual respect, and multilateral engagement.

He emphasized the long-standing friendship between the two countries, dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations on February 17, 1977.

“Our partnership has brought tangible benefits to our people,” President Boakai said, citing collaboration in infrastructure, health, education, and other vital services.

President Boakai extended warm congratulations to the Chinese people on the 76th anniversary of their nation’s founding and recognized the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance and the World Anti-Fascist War.

“May the friendship between Liberia and China continue to flourish in the spirit of cooperation and shared destiny,” he said.
