ADNew-Monrovia: George Manneh Weah, Sr., the former president of Liberia and current political leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has issued a strong statement accusing the Unity Party-led government under President Joseph Boakai of attempting to undermine the nation’s democratic institutions.
Weah claims the government is using ill-gotten funds from the national coffers to orchestrate the unjust removal of the Speaker of the House, Honorable J. Fonati Koffa. He described this as a “concerted and criminal effort” that threatens the integrity of Liberia’s legislative process.
“This blatant act of political chicanery sets a dangerous precedent for governance in our beloved nation,” Weah asserted. “Such actions will not be tolerated.”
He emphasized that the manipulation of the legislative branch for partisan gain is a direct affront to democracy and the will of the people. Weah praised Speaker Koffa for his dedication and integrity, labeling any effort to remove him illegally as a “desperate and cowardly tactic.”
In a call to action, Weah urged members of the CDC legislative caucus to resist the alleged plot. “Do not allow yourselves to be swayed by pecuniary gains or those who seek to destabilize our governance process,” he warned. He stressed that participating in such schemes would betray the trust of constituents and could have serious political repercussions for the future of those involved.
“We must remain steadfast in our commitment to democratic principles and the right of the people to choose their leaders without interference,” Weah concluded. “Let us also remain vigilant and united in our resolve to protect our national institutions and defend the integrity of our democracy.”
The statement has ignited discussions across the political landscape as Liberia grapples with ongoing issues surrounding governance and accountability.
