ADENews-Monrovia, Liberia: Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Director of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Fitzgerald T.M. Biago, and other current and former senior government officials allegedly involved in protecting a drug cartel operating in Liberia.
Senator Konneh made the call in a strongly worded statement posted on his social media Facebook handle early Saturday morning, August 8, 2026, in which he raised concerns over an expensive gift reportedly presented by a drug cartel to the country’s chief drug enforcement official, Biago.
According to Konneh, such a transaction could seriously undermine the government’s ongoing fight against illicit drugs and raise questions about the integrity of Liberia’s security sector.
“An expensive gift, supposedly from the cartel to the chief drug enforcer—who leads the Commander-in-Chief’s declared war on the cartel—represents a transaction that clearly undermines the war effort,” Konneh said.
He debated that the reported gift should not be treated as an ordinary transaction, stressing that there is no such thing as a “free lunch” when dealing with individuals or groups suspected of involvement in organized crime.
“There is no free lunch,” the senator added, while calling for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged relationship between senior security officials and the suspected cartel.
Konneh further called on the government to arrest and prosecute all current and former senior officials who may have protected or facilitated the activities of the alleged drug organization.
He also urged President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to appoint an independent counsel to work alongside foreign investigators currently assisting Liberia with the investigation.
“Our security sector—the people leading the war on drugs—is compromised by the cartel,” Konneh warned.
The Gbarpolu County senator directly appealed to President Boakai, describing the ongoing cocaine investigation as a potentially defining moment for the administration.
“President JNB, this Cocainegate is your LD$15 billion Containergate scandal—an issue that could define your presidency and Liberia’s future!” Konneh declared.
The senator’s call for arrests and an independent investigation is likely to add further pressure on the government and security institutions as authorities continue efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged drug cartel and its links to individuals within Liberia’s security apparatus.
