ADNews-Global: Liberia has been listed among dozens of countries whose delegations walked out of, remained absent from, or left their seats vacant during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, 2026.
The mass walkout came as Netanyahu took the podium to address the General Assembly, with delegates from over 70 countries reportedly leaving the chamber or choosing not to attend the address.
The protest was meant to oppose Israel’s military operations in Gaza and its wider regional actions.
Reports indicated that some countries completely cleared their rows, while others left only a single representative or junior diplomat in the chamber. Several delegations were also absent from the address.
The walkout of the assembly hall was organised by a Palestinian representative who said that they wanted to “send a clear message to Netanyahu and his government that no one is willing to aid, abet, or be complicit in its genocide and war crimes and illegal occupation, which all peace-loving states and peoples demand must come to an end”.
As delegates streamed out of the General Assembly chamber, Netanyahu continued his address and criticized those who had left.
“If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t left the hall, please do so now,” Netanyahu said during his speech.
The Israeli prime minister also defended his government’s military actions, arguing that Israel was acting in self-defense and that its actions were also protecting other countries.
The walkout left large sections of the General Assembly chamber visibly empty as Netanyahu continued speaking.
