ADNews-Gbarnga: The Gbarnga central market has transformed into a health hazard for both vendors and shoppers alike, as dumpsites within the market premises continue to overflow with waste, emitting a pungent stench.

According to vendors at the Gbarnga central market, these dumpsites have not been cleared for over a month, causing garbage to accumulate and release foul odors. Concerns are rising among vendors regarding the detrimental effects of these dumpsites on their health and that of their customers. Some vendors have resorted to wearing face masks in an attempt to shield themselves from the stench, albeit unsuccessfully.

“This situation is very perilous for us, our customers, and the public at large. The smell is overwhelming and is severely impacting our business,” expressed a vendor who chose to remain anonymous.

The overflow of waste has also led to an influx of flies and other insects, further complicating vendors’ ability to conduct business safely. “Our customers are complaining about the smell, and we’ve noticed a decline in sales as a result. We urge the relevant authorities to address this issue promptly before it escalates,” added another concerned vendor.

Moreover, the dumpsite has become a breeding ground for rodents, posing a significant risk for the spread of diseases. Vendors fear that if the situation remains unaddressed, it could trigger disease outbreaks within the market area. “We’ve spotted rats and other pests in the market, which could lead to the spread of diseases. We cannot afford to continue exposing ourselves and our customers to such health hazards,” emphasized another concerned vendor.

The lack of adequate waste management in the central market has persisted as an ongoing issue for years, prompting vendors to call upon the government for immediate action. “We pay taxes and fees to the local authorities of the Gbarnga central market, expecting them to provide essential services like garbage collection. This recurrent issue demands a permanent solution,” stated a market woman.

Efforts to obtain comments from the local authorities of the Liberia Marketing Association Bong County branch regarding this matter have been futile.

Meanwhile, both vendors and residents of Gbarnga urgently appeal to county authorities and the government to address this pressing issue promptly. They emphasize the critical need for proper waste management measures to be implemented in the central market to mitigate health risks effectively.
