ADNews- Lomé, Togo: Green Cities Inc. (GCI) has participated in the official launch of the Project for the Promotion of Agroecological Innovations in West Africa (PAI-WA), a regional initiative aimed at strengthening sustainable, resilient and inclusive agricultural development across West Africa.
The launch, held in Lomé, Togo, brought together representatives of regional institutions, governments, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, project promoters and other stakeholders involved in advancing agroecological approaches in the region.
GCI attended the event on behalf of the consortium implementing the Nutrition and Organic Uptake for Resilient Inclusive Sustainable Harvests for Family Farms (NOURISH-Family Farms) Project in Liberia.
The organization was represented by Mrs. Marie K. Kpoto, the General Manager and Mr. Dalitso Kuphanga, Progran a nd Business Development Manager who joined other project promoters and partners during the official ceremony and presentation of supported field initiatives.
One of the major highlights of the event was the symbolic presentation of project cheques to selected promoters. GCI, representing the NOURISH-Family Farms consortium, received the symbolic cheque for the Liberia project, marking an important milestone toward the full implementation of the initiative.
The launch ceremony included remarks from the ECOWAS Representation in Togo and contributions from technical and financial partners, including the European Union and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The ECOWAS Commission also addressed participants, while the official launch was conducted by a representative of the Togolese Ministry responsible for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty.
Participants were also introduced to a portfolio of 20 supported field projects being implemented across West Africa. The Regional Coordination Unit presented an overview of the initiatives, highlighting different approaches being used to promote agroecological innovation, strengthen family farming and improve the resilience of food systems.
The NOURISH-Family Farms Project is on of the 36 months’ field projects being supported under the regional agroecology programme. In Liberia, the project will be implemented in Montserrado and Nimba counties and will target 600 farmers, with women accounting for 60 percent of the beneficiaries. The project will also place particular emphasis on young farmers between the ages of 18 and 35. The will be implemented by a consortium led by Green Cities Inc. in partnership with Action Against Hunger and Say No To Hunger Farmers’ Multipurpose Cooperative Society (SNOTHFAMCOS).
Following the regional launch in Lomé, GCI and its consortium partners are expected to organize a national launch of the NOURISH-Family Farms Project in Liberia, followed by a county-level launch in Nimba County. The launches will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and other national and local stakeholders and will provide an opportunity to introduce the project to farming communities, government institutions and development partners.
The NOURISH-Family Farms Project represents an opportunity to strengthen sustainable agriculture, improve livelihoods and contribute to more resilient food systems in Liberia while supporting the broader regional drive toward agroecological transformation in West Africa.
