ADNews-Monrovia,Liberia: Information obtained have revealed that Michael U.S. Brown, the former Robert International Airport (RIA) employee who is now at the center of the reported US$19.2 million cocaine investigation and remains at large, was previously arrested, convicted, and imprisoned on separate drug-related charges before his release under circumstances that are now attracting renewed public attention.

Brown is currently being sought by investigators in connection with the ongoing US$19.2 million cocaine investigation, one of Liberia’s largest drug cases as Law enforcement authorities have described him as a major person of interest

His link to the $19.2M recent drug bust has prompted authorities to revisit his previous criminal record and the circumstances surrounding his release from prison the Kakata Central Prison without serving his full sentence term.

Court records show that on July 24, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Brown, who was then assigned to the Information Technology (IT) Department at the Robert International Airport, was arrested after authorities intercepted two cartons containing illegal drugs with an estimated street value of more than US$200,000, equivalent to approximately L$38 million.

Prosecutors charged Brown with Unlicensed Importation of Drugs or Controlled Substances, in violation of Sections 14.83 and 14.85 of Liberia’s drug law.

Investigators disclosed that Brown went to collect the two cartons, which had arrived aboard Brussels Airlines Flight SN241. The shipment bore his name, Michael U.S. Brown, along with his telephone number while the consignments were identified by tracking numbers IZC06F920441885680 and IZC06F9204418842516862.

Following his arrest, he was indicted before the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County during its August Term A.D. 2024, presided over by Resident Judge T. Ciapha Carey.

Brown was subsequently committed to the Kakata Central Prison on August 7, 2024, after being sentenced to serve a prison term of not less than five years.

However, less than two months after his imprisonment, the Office of the Superintendent of Kakata Central Prison, through Maj. Nelson P. Woah, wrote the court on September 19, 2024, requesting Brown’s temporary release on medical grounds to enable him to seek specialized treatment.

Documents reviewed show no where Judge T. Ciapha Carey signature was affixed to on the document seeking Brown’s temporary medical release, instead, the application was referenced by Cllr. Alfred B. Holmes, who served as Public Defender and counsel for the defendant while the Statement of Guarantee accompanying the request was signed by Brown’s fiancée, Ms. Toshey Garmett, and his sister, Ms. Christin G. Cheeks, with Regina T. George serving as witness.

The Senate has now moved mounting more pressure on the executive account on Michael where about and how he left the prison before completing his sentence term.
