Amidst President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s critical stance in fighting the long existence cancer “Corruption”,  several former government officials of the  Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)  have been indicted. At the same time, Central Bank Governor  Aloysius Tarlue is being suspended with immediate effect on corruption allegations leaving many others in worry.

The religious advisor to former president George  Weah, Rev. Emmanuel Nimley was the first incarcerated at Monrovia Central Prison followed by former Solicitor General of Liberia Cllr. Nyenati Tuan, former FIU (now FIA) Comptroller D. Moses P. Cooper, and former Director General of the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) Stanley Ford awaiting trial while former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah is on the run.

They were issued a writ of arrest to face charges of economic sabotage, theft, illegal disbursement and expenditure of public money, theft of property, criminal facilitation, and criminal conspiracy based on a complaint from the government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Justice and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).

It is alleged that in July 2023, the defendants conspired with Co-Defendant Stanley Ford, making him a member of the National Security Council of Liberia, in total violation of the National Security Act of Liberia.

Subsequently, at various times in September 2023, the defendants allegedly executed their scheme under the false pretense of discharging their duties as officials of the Joint Security of Liberia. Unauthorizedly, criminally, willfully, illegally, knowingly, and maliciously, with the intent to defraud the government of Liberia, they allegedly stole and converted to their own use funds transferred from the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) to the operational accounts of the FIA, amounting to L$1,055,152,540.00 and US$500,000.00.

Former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah, another defendant, is reportedly out of the country, in neighboring Cote d’Ivoire.

Meanwhile,  on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, a day after sending several former government officials to prison,  President Joseph Boakai suspended the Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), Aloysius Tarlue, in response to findings from a recent General Auditing Commission (GAC) audit.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah announced the suspension during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT). Minister Piah explained that the suspension is a direct result of the GAC audit report, which requires Governor Tarlue’s temporary removal from office to address the audit’s findings.

“Governor Tarlue will be suspended to answer to the audit report by the GAC,” stated Minister Piah, emphasizing the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency within its institutions.

As a result of Boakai’s actions, the majority of ordinary Liberians both in and outside the country predict his success if he continues on his unique path while the majority of the former government officials remain worried about his next action.
