ADNews-Monrovia: Eugene Lenn Nagbe, Chief of Staff to former Liberian President George Weah, is facing serious legal consequences following accusations of defamation against Sam Gaye, the Executive Protection Service (EPS) Director and Chief Bodyguard to the current President.
Gaye’s legal team, represented by Toun-Ya Legal Consultancy and Arbitration Chamber, LLC, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Nagbe, demanding that he publicly retract his defamatory statements or face unspecified legal action.
The accusations stem from an interview on O.K. F.M. on March 31, 2025, with Clarence Jackson in which Nagbe alleged that Gaye had a photo in his bedroom depicting a gun aimed at former President Weah. According to Gaye’s legal team, these claims are false and have severely damaged Gaye’s reputation both in Liberia and abroad.
In a formal letter sent to Nagbe on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Kabineh M. Ja’neh, Senior Counselor at Toun-Ya Legal Consultancy, emphasized that under the law, defamatory statements—whether spoken or written—are prohibited if they damage an individual’s reputation. The letter further stated that Gaye’s reputation had been unjustly harmed due to Nagbe’s baseless accusations.
The legal team’s letter reads in part: “We refer to the substantial accusations you made on March 31, 2025, against Mr. Sam Gaye during an interview on O.K. F.M . In that interview, you accused Mr. Gaye of having a photo in his bedroom depicting a gun at former President Weah.’ These defamatory statements, although untrue, have led to significant harm to Mr. Gaye’s reputation on both a national and international scale.”
Gaye’s legal representatives are demanding that Nagbe issue a public retraction within 48 hours of receiving the letter. Failure to do so will result in unspecified legal action.
The controversy has raised questions about the limits of public discourse in Liberia’s political landscape, with many observers awaiting the outcome of this legal battle.
