ADnews-Monrovia: The United States Ambassador to Liberia, Mark  Toner urges the University of Liberia Graduates to promote peace as he highlights the vital role of higher education in fostering peace and sustainable development in the country.

Speaking at the University of Liberia’s (UL) graduation ceremony over the weekend, Amb. Mark emphasized the importance of their education in shaping Liberia’s future.

“Congratulations to all of you on reaching this remarkable milestone.  Your success is a testament to hard work and dedication, both from you and those who have supported you.”

Reflecting on the historical ties between the U.S. and Liberia, the Ambassador reflects on his connection as a former Peace Corps Volunteer, asserting that the graduates are crucial to the nation’s development. He urged them to remain in Liberia and contribute to building a prosperous future, rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

The Ambassador discussed Liberia’s progress since the civil war, highlighting the country’s strides toward democratic governance and stability. He praised the recent peaceful transfers of power as significant milestones. However, he warned that challenges such as corruption and impunity remain significant obstacles to progress.

He also commended the efforts made so far in establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court stating that it is a necessary step in promoting justice.

“The United States is proud to support Liberia’s education sector,” the Ambassador stated, reinforcing the idea that a well-educated populace is essential for the country’s future.

“I have seen firsthand the strength, resilience, and determination of Liberians,” the ambassador stated. “You, the graduates of today, are key to ensuring Liberia’s future matches the vision you have for. yourselves and your nation.”

The US   Ambassador acknowledged the significant strides Liberia has made since the end of its civil war, including peaceful transfers of power and increasing stability. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding corruption, infrastructure, and economic opportunity. “Nothing worthwhile ever comes easily,” the ambassador remarked, emphasizing the importance of hard decisions and overcoming obstacles.

Highlighting the role of education, Ambassador Toner emphasized that institutions like the University of Liberia is crucial for equipping the next generation with the skills necessary for economic growth and stability.

In conclusion, he inspired graduates to embrace their roles as agents of change, encouraging them to dream big and take risks. “You have a bright future ahead of you, and you hold the power to shape the trajectory of your country,” said Amb. Toner.
