ADNews-Monrovia: A group of breakaway members from the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Liberia, who oppose the church’s doctrine supporting gay marriage and the appointment of gay bishops, remains resolute in its commitment to preserving what they believe to be the true teachings of Jesus Christ, even at the risk of their own lives.
Early Sunday morning, March 2, 2025, the Liberian National Police apprehended UMC lead anti-gay campaigner Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah with some of his supporters at the 72 UMC in Paynesville while they were there to conduct their regular Sunday services, jailed at the local police Holding Cell in Congo outside Monrovia.
After spending several hours in custody, Rev. Kulah and his followers were released.
However, Kula and his followers, who are campaigning against the UMC’s regionalization policy, which encourages and approves gay rights and other immoral activities within the church, have vowed to remain steadfast in their quest against this policy.
Speaking briefly upon their release, Rev. Kula accused the head Bishop of the UMC in Liberia, Rev. Dr. Samuel J. Quire, Jr., of betraying the church’s original teachings.
“Bishop Quire and all of us agreed that the day the United Methodist Church Worldwide passes the regionalization policy, we will leave and go our separate way”, Rev. Kula revealed. “Bishop Quire is on record campaigning from Church to Church, district to district, but after his 2023 engagement with the global convention, he somersaulted”.
Rev. Kulah and his followers argue that the acceptance of gay practices within the church is not only a violation of moral standards but also a direct breach of Liberia’s Constitution, which they claim strongly opposes such acts.
Despite the growing religious tensions surrounding the debate, the government of Liberia, led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has remained tight-lipped.
However, it has continued to offer security support, affecting those opposing gay rights establishment within the church.
The battle within the United Methodist Church in Liberia seems far from over, as factions continue to clash over what they believe are fundamental moral issues, with no resolution in sight.
In the Holy Bible, in Leviticus 20: 11-14, the Word of God says “And the man that lieth with his father’s wife hath uncovered his father’s nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. 12 And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them. 13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. 14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you”.
