ADNews-Monrovia:The Head of Communications at the Civil Service Agency (CSA), Joseph N.N. Swen, has described former refugees who once resided at the Buduburam camp in Ghana as a beacon of hope and a reminder of resilience.
Mr. Swen emphasized that former Liberian refugees have made significant contributions to Liberia’s public and private sectors, and he reiterated a message of continued solidarity, determination, and hope for the future.
The Buduburam Veterans Association (BVA) is a collective of individuals who endured difficult times in a foreign land. Recently, the association marked its 10th anniversary with a heartfelt celebration, reflecting on the journey of former Liberian refugees who sought refuge in Ghana. The event also highlighted their remarkable transformation over the years under the theme “Bring Memories Back.”
Swen added that the profound lessons learned from their settlement should not be forgotten. He stressed that the Buduburam experience became a symbol of resilience and transformation for thousands of refugees who fled Liberia’s brutal civil conflict.
He emphasized that the story of Buduburam is not one of despair but rather a narrative of courage, ingenuity, and an unyielding spirit—one that reshaped lives and ignited the energies of transformation.
The CSA communications head acknowledged that, while Buduburam provided immediate relief and safety, it also presented immense challenges. Refugees faced the harsh reality of starting life anew with limited resources. Despite these obstacles, Buduburam became a symbol of self-transformation.
Swen explained that surviving at Buduburam gradually evolved from merely meeting basic needs to fostering a sense of purpose and hope.
He also highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit at Buduburam, noting that it not only led to economic activity but also helped refugees regain their dignity. As businesses, schools, churches, and vocational training programs emerged, they showcased the spirit of entrepreneurship that flourished despite the absence of formal economic structures.
Furthermore, Swen underscored the vital role of the BVA, which continues to provide a strong support network for former Liberian refugees who have returned to Liberia. He stated that the BVA serves as a reminder of the resourcefulness and self-belief that enabled former refugees to survive and thrive at Buduburam.
Swen urged former refugees to apply the same creativity, self-belief, and innovation they demonstrated at Buduburam to contribute to the rebuilding efforts of Liberia.
