The market structures were demolished on the order of Gbarnga City Mayor Gallah Vapliah as a means of relocating the old market to the newly constructed Madam Sirleaf Market site.

After the demolition of a major portion of the old market structures, local marketers staged a massive protest on Monday, July 29, 2024, in reaction to the Gbarnga City Mayor’s actions. The marketers set blockades on the Gbarnga-Monrovia road, thus preventing the free flow of traffic in the central region of Liberia.

The disenchanted marketers have earlier complained about the reported deplorable state of the new market facility, with a call to the city council and the marketing association to fence the facility because of the large river flowing at the back of the facility.

On the other hand, political pundits have pointed accusing fingers to Representative Josiah Marvin Cole of being the mastermind behind the marketer’s protest actions.

But, appearing on the protest scene, on Monday, Senator Moye ordered the marketers to return to the demolished market facilities and rebuild their structures to resume normal commercial activities.

The Bong County Senator, at the same time, made available one hundred bundles of zinc and three hundred thousand Liberian dollars (LD $300,000.00) to the marketers to reconstruct their demolished facilities. He then instructed the marketers to remain selling in the old market until December this year.

Meanwhile, Senator Moye’s action has sparked agreements among residents of the county, with many describing it as a total disrespect and humiliation to Mayor Varplair’s functions.

Key amongst the disappointed  County’s residents is Senator Jonny Kpehe Sr., who according to a trusted source has expressed total disappointment in his colleague’s action, thus terming it as unilateral.

Our source hinted to us that Senator Kpehe, during a telephone conversation with Senator Moye is quoted as saying, “Honorable Moye, why did you make such a decision without informing us as lawmakers of the county”.

As it stands, it is unclear as to whether the marketers will pay heed to the city council’s mandate and move to the newly constructed Sirleaf Market.
