ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: The Nimba County Legislative Caucus has thrown its full support behind Senator Nyahn D. Twayen Jr. for his unwavering stance against ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML), accusing the company of persistent violations of its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).

In a statement released on  Saturday, June 13, 2025, the caucus praised Senator Twayen’s “courageous advocacy” on behalf of the people of Nimba, citing widespread dissatisfaction with AML’s failure to meet key obligations under the agreement. These include commitments related to infrastructure development, employment opportunities, environmental protection, and community welfare.

“Senator Twayen’s position is not only legitimate—it reflects the deep frustrations of the people of Nimba, who continue to endure the impacts of extractive operations with minimal developmental returns,” the statement read.

The lawmakers also strongly condemned what they described as underhanded attempts by AML to sway public opinion through inducements to individuals and organizations in exchange for opposing the caucus’s stance.

“These efforts are dishonest, divisive, and a direct affront to the principles of transparency, accountability, and democratic engagement,” the caucus asserted.

Emphasizing their loyalty to the people of Nimba rather than to foreign corporations or special interest groups, the caucus vowed not to be distracted by any campaign aimed at weakening the legitimate demands of their constituents.

As part of their demands, the Nimba Legislative Caucus called for the following:

  1. A comprehensive review of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s compliance with the Mineral Development Agreement.
  2. Immediate and measurable actions to address long-standing grievances raised by host communities.
  3. An end to all tactics aimed at undermining community representation and advocacy.

Reaffirming their support for Senator Twayen, the caucus pledged to continue advocating for accountability, fairness, and equity in all corporate dealings that impact Nimba County.

“The people of Nimba deserve better,” the statement concluded. “We will not relent in demanding justice and responsibility from all companies operating within our borders.”
