ADNews-Monrovia: The Liberian National Police (LNP) has used excessive force to handle public school Students who went to petition the government to increase their Teachers’ wages, leaving most with terrible injuries
Recently, government teachers from the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) have boycotted classes in demand of salary increments, resulting in widespread disruptions in schools, leaving many classrooms inactive despite the ongoing educational activities in other parts of the country.
Due to their Teachers’ actions, students attending MCSS, with the bulk of them from less fortunate and poor backgrounds, move in their numbers at the House of Legislature , seeking their lawmakers attention to respond to their plights.
The state security, instead of protecting the peaceful students, used tear gas batons and other objects, chased after them, and left several wounded.
The police’s action did not just affect MCSS students, it also halted normal activities on the main campus of the state-run university, the University of Liberia.
Meanwhile, several others were affected, including bystanders, and created huge traffic which lasted for hours.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation of the government’s handling of the peaceful protests and raised concerns about the treatment of students seeking to have their voices heard.
