ADNews- Monrovia: On August 21, 2024, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) conducted a significant drug operation in Sinkor, resulting in the arrest of 36-year-old Abu Keita. The Ivorian national, who resides on 18th Street in Sinkor, was apprehended for possession, sales, and distribution of a powder-like substance suspected to be heroin and methamphetamine (commonly known as KUSH).
Following Keita’s arrest, an investigation was launched, and the seized substances were tested on August 22, 2024. The results confirmed that the powder contained both heroin and methamphetamine. The total weight of the narcotics seized was 3.6 kilograms, with each substance weighing 1.8 kilograms.
The methamphetamine (KUSH) had an estimated street value of USD 36,000, equivalent to LRD 6,840,000. In comparison, the heroin’s street value was pegged at USD 81,000, or LRD 15,390,000. Thus, the combined total street value of the drugs amounted to USD 117,000, which is approximately LRD 22,230,000.
In response to the arrest, the LDEA has charged Abu Keita with multiple offenses under Liberia’s drug laws. Specifically, he faces charges for possession, sale, and distribution of narcotic substances. These charges are in violation of Sections 14.89 and 14.85 of the 2023 Drugs Law as amended, as well as Sections 10.4 and 10.2 of the Penal Law of Liberia.
The LDEA’s successful operation accentuates its ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking and distribution in the country. The agency’s action is a significant step in addressing the growing concerns surrounding illegal narcotics and their impact on communities.
Suspect Abu Keita is now in custody and will be forwarded to court for prosecution. The case highlights the LDEA’s vigilance and effectiveness in tackling drug-related crimes, ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions.
The seizure of these substantial quantities of methamphetamine and heroin is expected to have a noticeable impact on the local drug market, contributing to a safer environment in Sinkor and beyond. The LDEA continues to encourage the public to assist in its efforts by reporting suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
As the legal process unfolds, the LDEA remains resolute in its mission under the watch of the Institution’s current Officer In Charge (OIC) Christopher Peters to dismantle drug networks and prevent the spread of illegal narcotics. The agency’s actions serve as a reminder of its dedication to maintaining law and order in Liberia.
