ADNews-Monrovia: The Resident Judge of the 9th Judicial Circuit Court, in Gbarnga, Bong County has today (August 29), clarified his June 18, 2024 ruling in the Press Union of Liberia 2022 disputed election.
Making his clarification at a conference called at Temple of Justice in Monrovia with parties to the dispute and the Interim Committee, Judge J. Boima Konto said, “I am neither modifying nor reversing my ruling; the Interim Committee is to clean up the voter roll and conduct a re-run of the election.”
Judge Konto told the Interim Committee, “Only those who participated in the 2022 election… there will be no new candidates.”
The conference followed a request made by the Interim Committee for the Judge to clarify his decision, amid the varying interpretations. Only one of the parties attended the conference.
In his 18 June mandate, Judge Konto nullified the November 19, 2022 election results. He went on to say, “A rerun is hereby ordered on or before October 18, 2024; The Court hereby orders an Interim Committee of seven former leaders of the Union along with four media elders to take over the leadership of the Press Union of Liberia to clean the voter roll consistent with Article 10 Section 7 of the Press Union of Liberia Constitution to conduct fresh free and fair elections.”
With the clarification made, the Interim Committee remains seized of the process to ensure the restoration of the Union. In the coming days, the Committee will present a revised timeline for the conduct of the rerun election.
