ADNews-Bong County: Gbarnga City Corporation (GCC) has initiated an ambitious project aimed at turning waste into fertilizer, offering a sustainable solution for both waste management and agriculture in the region.

Mayor Gallah Varpilah recently told the press that the new fertilizer production initiative will support local farmers by enhancing soil quality and boosting crop yields. The process involves collecting organic waste from households and businesses, shredding it, and composting it with additional materials like manure and wood chips. The end result is a nutrient-rich compost that can be used to enrich the soil, promoting healthier plants and more robust agricultural production.
The project has already garnered positive feedback from Gbarnga residents, many of whom have struggled with waste management issues for years. “We are happy that the city is taking proactive steps to address the issue of waste management. This project will not only make our city cleaner but also provide us with an opportunity to contribute to sustainable agriculture,” said a local resident.
In addition to waste collection and composting, the Gbarnga City Corporation plans to educate the community on the importance of waste separation and recycling. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency of the project and further reduce the environmental impact of waste in the area.
The fertilizer project marks a significant step toward sustainable urban management in Gbarnga. With the proper implementation and community support, it holds the potential to transform waste into a valuable resource, not only for the city but also for local agriculture. This initiative sets a positive example for other cities in Liberia to follow, showcasing how innovative solutions can address pressing environmental and economic challenges.
