ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: In observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, the Foundation for Youth and Women Empowerment (FYWE) joins the global community in raising awareness about the importance of menstrual health and hygiene, and the need to create a world where menstruation is no longer a barrier to dignity, education, or opportunity.
This year’s global theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” calls on all stakeholders to ensure that every individual who menstruates has access to period education, safe menstrual hygiene products, clean facilities, and the right to live free from stigma and shame.
Despite being a natural and essential biological process, menstruation continues to be surrounded by taboos and misinformation that lead to discrimination, poor health outcomes, and missed opportunities, particularly for girls and women in underserved communities.
In Liberia, many girls still lack access to affordable menstrual products and proper hygiene education, which contributes to school absenteeism, low self-esteem, and gender-based exclusion. At FYWE, we believe that menstrual health is a human right, not a privilege. Menstruation is not a weakness; it is a sign of strength, resilience, and womanhood.
As such, we continue to prioritize menstrual health and hygiene in our programs, advocating for equitable access to products and safe spaces for girls and women across the country. FYWE’s work includes direct support to adolescent girls in schools and communities through the distribution of reusable sanitary pads, menstrual health education sessions, and the establishment of girl friendly sanitation facilities.
These efforts are aligned with our broader mission to advance gender equality and empower women and girls to live healthy, dignified lives. Our approach also emphasizes the importance of policy advocacy, encouraging local and national authorities to invest in gender-responsive education, infrastructure, and health services that uphold the dignity of menstruators and eliminate period poverty. We continue to work alongside civil society organizations, educators, parents, and traditional leaders to break the silence and normalize conversations around menstruation. On this Menstrual Hygiene Day, FYWE reaffirms its commitment to building a society where no girl or woman is held back because of her period. We stand in solidarity with global efforts to create a future where menstruation is recognized as the powerful, natural process it is, not a taboo. Let us raise our voices, challenge stigma, and move forward—together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld
