ADNEws-Monrovia, Liberia: A Chinese-owned concrete mixing Company, Rui-Xu, is carrying on a huge construction project on wetland land, posing a serious environmental hazard in several communities within the Johnsonville Township, outside Monrovia.

Rui-Xu occupied over 80 acres of wetland in the New Jerusalem and Greenland communities, surrounded by over 1500  homes, while the wetland has been reserved as the only means to control the water runoff.

This project, if not halted, will significantly increase flooding, resulting in serious destruction of properties and even risking the lives of the residents.

Ms. Kebbeh George, one of the residents involved in the “local real estate business”, sees the blockage of the wetland as a propose setback amidst global climate change awareness.

“ We don’t know how they get here, but the Environmental Protection Agency and other internal partners have warned us seriously to stop building on the wetland or waterways,”  Kebbeh intoned. If we allow this to happen,  we will experience a climate catastrophe.

The general chairperson of the communities, Teddy Williams, is calling for swift intervention to halt the construction in order to avoid the environmental hazard.

“Every day we hear about climate, and we see what is happening, like floods, heat, and other unusual events, blocking the waterway will not be good for our well-being.  They must stop now to save lives,” Charman Williams noted.

Urgent call to halt the construction intensifies, amidst climate justice advocacy to mitigate climate change across the globe.
