ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: A member of the Liberian Legislature has raised concerns over a steady decline in the quality and standard dimensions of locally manufactured construction materials, particularly steel rods, nails and zinc sheets produced by Sethi Brothers Company.

Amidst  public  outcry, Nimba County District #5 Representative Kortor Kwagrue has formally called for the immediate summoning of Sethi Brothers Company, along with officials from the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to explain their roles in ensuring compliance with national standards and safeguarding public safety.

In a recent communication to the Legislature, Rep. Kwagrue cited growing complaints from contractors, builders and ordinary citizens who allege that locally produced steel rods, traditionally manufactured at a standard length of 12 meters (about 40 feet), are now being produced at shorter lengths ranging from nine to 10 meters. Despite the reduction, the products are reportedly being sold at the same market price.

Similar concerns have been raised about zinc sheets, which previously averaged between 10 and 12 feet in length but are now reportedly being manufactured at only eight to nine feet.

According to the lawmaker, these changes have raised serious questions about durability, adequate coverage and rising construction costs for consumers.

Rep. Kwagrue warned that if the allegations are confirmed, the practice could amount to unfair trade and pose risks to national construction standards, public safety and consumer confidence. He stressed that strong regulatory oversight is essential to ensure that locally manufactured construction materials meet approved industrial and engineering benchmarks.

“The integrity of our construction sector depends on strict adherence to standards,” Kwagrue noted, emphasizing that any compromise could have far-reaching consequences for both public safety and economic stability.

The invited ministers and representatives of Sethi Brothers Company are expected to clarify the reported changes, outline their level of compliance with national regulations and explain what measures are being taken to protect consumers and uphold construction standards across the country.
