Recall not Resignation

ADNews-Monrovia: The former Liberian Ambassador to the United Nations, Sarah Safyn Fyneah, has lied regarding the circumstances of her departure from her prestigious role at the UN while new revelations are popping up during her services at the mission.

On August 6, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially notified Fyneah of her recall, stating, “Madam Ambassador, I present my compliments and wish to inform you of your recall to the Ministry, thus ending your tenure in the diplomatic service to the United Nations.” This communication indicates that the Liberian government terminated her contract.Despite this formal termination, Fyneah report

edly engaged in lobbying efforts around the presidency, seeking to have the decision reversed.

When these attempts failed, she took the opportunity to bid farewell to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, posing for a photo and suggesting that she had resigned,  an effort to gain public trust and admiration.

However, Fyneah’s tenure was reportedly marred by several diplomatic missteps including financial impropriety,  irregular and unreasonable absence from the job, poor excuses with lack of accountability prompting a top American diplomat “name withheld”  characterizing  her as a “deadweight” within the diplomatic community. Reports indicate that she missed multiple meetings, which often left Liberia’s seat at the UN vacant.

Under her watch, Liberia notably failed this year to vote on the UN resolution   to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, instead favoring Russia for her own self-aggrandizement. This shift raised concerns about her commitment to representing the interests of Liberia at the UN.

Fyneah’s absence from critical meetings also included a controversial vote regarding a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during the administration of former President George Weah. At that time, Liberia stood alone among African nations, being one of the  only ten out of 193 member states to reject the UN’s December 12, 2023 call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas while the resolution received backing from 153 countries.

The implications of her decisions during this period have drawn scrutiny, as many view her actions as detrimental to Liberia’s diplomatic standing. Her failure to attend vital discussions resulted in a missed opportunity for Liberia to align with broader international sentiments.

While  the fallout continues, the government of Liberia faces pressure to address these issues transparently as the public deserves clarity on the reasons behind Fyneah’s recall and the ramifications of her actions during her tenure.

Sarah’s action has pushed the public to mount more pressure on the government to reassess its diplomatic strategies and ensure that representatives are held accountable for their conduct and decision-making at the international level. The case of Amb. Fyneah serves as a critical reminder of the importance of accountability in diplomacy.

Citizens are calling on the government to launch a thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding her tenure to restore trust in Liberia’s diplomatic mission and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to international cooperation and responsible representation.

As more information comes to light, the Liberian public awaits further developments in this unfolding story as implications of Fyneah’s actions could have lasting effects on Liberia’s foreign relations and its role in global diplomacy.

Investigation into this matter continues by this outlet as we await a response to our inquiry sent to the Former  Liberian Ambassador to the United Nations, Sarah Safyn Fyneahr through her official email.
