Drug Enforcement Boss  Obstructs Justice

ADNews-Monrovia,Liberia: Calls are growing for the Liberian Government and international partners supporting the country’s fight against illicit drugs to ensure accountability following allegations involving the Officer-in-Charge of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Fitzgerald T.M. Biago.

Biago has requested that the Ministry of Justice temporarily recuse him from his functions as head of the LDEA while an independent investigation is conducted into allegations that he received a Toyota pickup vehicle from an individual allegedly associated with a drug-trafficking organization.

In a letter dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, and addressed to Justice Minister Cllr. Oswald Tweh, Biago requested authorization to temporarily step aside from his duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

Despite Biago’s denial, the allegations have raised renewed concerns about the credibility of Liberia’s fight against illicit drugs, particularly at a time when the country is dealing with a major drug investigation.

Many calls are now made  on the Government of Liberia to ensure that the investigation is not handled as an internal administrative matter but is conducted independently and transparently.

They argue that any allegation involving the leadership of the country’s principal drug-enforcement institution must be thoroughly investigated because public confidence in the anti-drug campaign depends heavily on the credibility and independence of the LDEA.

The government and Liberia’s international partners are also being urged to closely monitor the investigation and ensure that anyone found to have compromised or undermined the country’s fight against illicit drugs is held responsible in accordance with law.

These  allegations, if proven, could have serious implications for Liberia’s national security and its cooperation with international agencies involved in combating drug trafficking.

Ministry of Justice and other relevant authorities are  urged  to ensure that the investigation is free from political influence and that its findings are made public.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether the allegations have merit and whether further administrative, criminal, or institutional action is warranted.
