ECOWAS Reaffirms Push for Constitutional Order In Bissau

ADNews-Bissau: Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who chairs the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, held a high-level dialogue on Monday, December 1, 2025 with Guinea-Bissau’s military leadership, reaffirming the regional bloc’s commitment to restoring constitutional order in the country.
President Bio met with the military leaders led by Maj. Gen. Horta Inta-a during a mission mandated by an extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council. The council tasked Bio with engaging directly with the coup leaders to push for the full reinstatement of democratic governance.
He was accompanied by Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission; Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Secretary-General’s special representative for West Africa and the Sahel; and Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, Sierra Leone’s foreign minister and chair of the ECOWAS Executive Council.
During the visit, the delegation also met with Guinea-Bissau’s Electoral Commission. The commission’s chairman and other members briefed the officials on the country’s current electoral situation as ECOWAS continues its efforts to guide the nation back to constitutional rule.
