ADNews-Monrovia: In commemoration of his birth anniversary, Business tycoon Dr. Upjit Singh Sachdeva widely known as “Jeety: has initiated a drilling project at the Monrovia Central Prison aimed at restoring a reliable water supply to the prison facility.
The prison, Liberia’s largest correctional facility, has been grappling with severe water shortages, exacerbating already challenging conditions for over 1,400 inmates for weeks. However, the prison authority’s request to Mr. Sachdeva is expected to resolve the water crisis, as drilling of the prison borehole has begun at the facility.
“Water is a basic human right,” Mr. Sachdeva stated during the project’s commencement on Thursday, April 24, 2025. “Regardless of their circumstances, every individual deserves access to clean water. This is just my small way of supporting and uplifting the vulnerable segments of our society.”
This endeavor is just one of a series of philanthropic efforts by Mr. Sachdeva, who has been a steadfast supporter of Liberia’s underprivileged communities. Since launching his hot-cooked meal initiative in 2017, he has provided nearly four million meals to inmates, disadvantaged youth, and other marginalized groups across the country.
He has also in the past made substantial contributions to the Monrovia Central Prison, including the installation of a water system and a generator to improve living conditions for inmates. His efforts extend beyond the prison walls as he provided Christmas packages to over 4,000 children in Margibi County, bringing joy to many families during the festive season.
In recognition of his extraordinary humanitarian contributions, Mr. Sachdeva was awarded Liberia’s prestigious Golden Image Award two years ago, an honor reserved for individuals whose service significantly impacts the lives of Liberians. The award cements his status as one of the nation’s most impactful philanthropists.
Roosevelt Varney, Superintendent for the Monrovia Central Prison, expressed gratitude for Mr. Sachdeva’s continued support. “Jeety has been a pillar of support for us. His contributions have significantly improved the welfare of our inmates, and we are immensely thankful for his unwavering commitment.”
Mr. Sachdeva’s philanthropic effort is rooted in his belief: “Don’t give to get; give to inspire others,” he often remarks.
