ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: Unconfirmed reports emerging from Capitol Building corridors suggest that the tenure of House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon may be under increasing threat, as a majority of lawmakers are reportedly considering moves to unseat him and replace him with Deputy Speaker , Lofa County District #1 Representative Thomas Fallah.
Early Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the House of Representatives reportedly failed to secure the required quorum to conduct its regular legislative business, as several lawmakers were absent from the session, prompting Koon to issue a stern warning to lawmakers who repeatedly fail to attend legislative sittings.
According to a report by Liberian Voices Network, more than 40 lawmakers are currently meeting at the River View Hotel near the St. Paul Bridge, strategizing to immediately and effectively remove the Speaker.
“Unconfirmed reports indicate that 41 lawmakers are meeting today at the River View Hotel near the St. Paul Bridge. Sources suggest the group is plotting the removal of House Speaker Koon,” the network reported.
The report further claimed that Representative Thomas Fallah is being positioned as the leading candidate to succeed Koon should any leadership change occur within the House.
Speaker Koon rose to the Speakership following a prolonged and controversial leadership dispute that led to the removal of former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa of Grand Kru County. The process generated significant legal and political debate, with critics questioning the legitimacy of the transition.
Since assuming office, Koon’s leadership has faced public criticism and political resistance from both within and outside the Legislature. The dispute over the Speakership dominated national political discussions for several months before a resolution was eventually reached in early 2025.
As of press time, neither Speaker Koon nor Representative Fallah had publicly commented on the reported plot. Likewise, no official communication has been issued by the House of Representatives regarding the allegations.
The situation remains fluid, as further developments are expected son
