ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has officially launched a nationwide “Clean Note Campaign” aimed at combating the growing problem of mutilated banknotes and fostering respect for the Liberian dollar.

The campaign, launched under the theme “Our Money, Our Pride, Handle It with Care,” seeks to build national consciousness and preserve the integrity and value of the Liberian dollar.

Speaking at the launch on Friday, September 19, 2025, in Monrovia, Juah K. Feika, Deputy Director for Banking Services, urged Liberians to handle the national currency with care.

“The Liberian dollar is not just money; it is our national pride. Writing on it, squeezing it, or exposing it to oil and moisture is unacceptable,” she said. Feika stressed that careless handling of banknotes shortens their lifespan and costs the country millions of dollars in replacement costs.

Also addressing the event, Alphonso Zeon, Head of Corporate Communications at the CBL, disclosed that it cost the bank over US$25 million to print the latest L$48 billion in new notes. Alarmingly, he revealed that L$1 billion has already been damaged.

Zeon further warned that defacing the Liberian currency is a crime punishable by law, with penalties ranging from a fine of L$500,000 to two years in prison.

He added that the Bank is collaborating with market associations, motorcyclists, and exchange bureaus to raise awareness
