ADNews-Monrovia,Liberia:The Bishop of the Independent Catholic Church of Liberia, Bishop Nimley J. Donyen, has donated 300,000 Liberian dollars (US$1,600) to the Pepperwulu Market women in Johnsonville Township to help revive their businesses after completing the renovation of the fire-damaged market.

The market, which Bishop Donyen originally built, was recently demolished in part by government authorities to open a corridor and was later engulfed by a fire that destroyed large portions of the facility. The blaze left dozens of traders displaced and stripped many of their only source of income.

Following the disaster, market women appealed to the Bishop and other well-meaning Liberians for assistance in restoring the vital marketplace. Responding to their plea, Bishop Donyen led the renovation and provided financial aid to help traders restart their livelihoods.

Speaking during the donation ceremony on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Bishop Donyen reaffirmed his commitment to serving humanity regardless of background, describing the gesture as both a moral and biblical duty.

“When our brothers and sisters are suffering, we cannot stand aside and watch,” Bishop Donyen said. “Helping people is my calling. I will continue to give as long as God gives me the strength and the means.”

The Bishop emphasized that his intervention was intended to help victims rebuild their businesses and restore hope in their lives. He also pledged to extend similar humanitarian assistance to other disaster-affected communities across Liberia, stressing that “true religion is demonstrated in service to humanity.”

Receiving the cash donation, Madam Susan Ballah, Assistant Superintendent of the Pepperwulu Market, expressed gratitude on behalf of the vendors.

“The kindness of Bishop Donyen is unmatched,” she said. “He continues to show that leadership is not only about words but about action. We promise to use this money wisely for the benefit of all affected marketers.”

Madam Victoria Koffa, the market’s advisor, lauded the prelate for his consistent compassion, noting that Bishop Donyen has long supported the Johnsonville community through various humanitarian efforts.

“This is not the first time he has reached out,” she said. “His generosity has touched lives beyond his church.”

One of the beneficiaries, Ma Annie Gaye, a petty trader who lost her goods in the fire, described the donation as a lifeline.

“We lost everything in the fire,” she said. “But today, we feel that God has not forgotten us. Bishop Donyen’s help gives us the courage to start again.”

Community residents who witnessed the presentation hailed Bishop Donyen as “a man of the people,” praising his leadership for blending spirituality with humanitarian service. Many recounted previous occasions when he provided food, medical supplies, and tuition assistance to struggling families.

In recent years, the Independent Catholic Church of Liberia, under Bishop Donyen’s leadership, has launched several outreach programs, including health drives, youth empowerment initiatives, and support for widows and orphans. His continued acts of compassion have earned him widespread respect throughout Montserrado County.

For the traders of Pepperwulu Market, Bishop Donyen’s donation symbolizes more than financial support, it represents renewed hope and unity in the face of hardship.
