Healthcare delivery remains critical in the county, but several workers at Phebe Hospital have reduced their services in protest over longstanding grievances, resulting in the abandonment of some patients.

Phebe Hospital is one of the largest referral facilities in Bong County, serving thousands of citizens from across the county and neighboring regions.

On Monday, February 23, 2026, the aggrieved workers met with Civil Service Agency Director-General Dr. Josiah Joekai, Bong County authorities, and other stakeholders at the hospital in an effort to find solutions to the ongoing crisis.

The meeting was expected to address a series of longstanding concerns raised by the health workers, including salary disparities, lack of employment benefits, poor working conditions, and uncertainties surrounding the employment status of several staff members.

During the meeting, Dr. Joekai called on the health workers to remain calm, assuring them that the government and its partners would engage further to resolve the matter. He urged them to avoid protest actions that could endanger the lives of patients receiving treatment at the hospital.

However, contrary to expectations following the meeting, the situation worsened. On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, aggrieved workers were seen abandoning their posts, forcing some patients to leave the hospital with their relatives due to the lack of medical attention.

The situation has since become a major concern in Bong County, with many citizens calling on the government to urgently address the workers’ grievances to prevent possible loss of life.

Speaking on behalf of the Phebe Workers Association, its president, Mr. Moses D. David, said the workers’ action was intended to send a strong message to the Government of Liberia to address their concerns.

The protest action has created fear and uncertainty among residents of Bong County and neighboring areas who rely on the hospital for medical services.

Observers also reported seeing several nurses who boarded the Phebe Hospital bus Tuesday morning later returning to their homes, leaving patients unattended as part of the go-slow action.

Some citizens who spoke to reporters expressed sadness over the workers’ decision, noting that patients depend on healthcare professionals for survival and recovery.

They are now calling for immediate government intervention to resolve the crisis and restore normal health services, warning that continued disruption could lead to preventable deaths.
