ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced the arrival of the first batch of rice donated by the People’s Republic of China. The donation is part of a 3,600-metric-ton food assistance package intended to strengthen Liberia’s food supply and promote national food security.
The grant agreement was formalized through an Exchange of Notes between His Excellency Mr. Yin Chengwu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Liberia, and Her Excellency Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Ministry, the first consignment, weighing 720 metric tons (about 14,400 bags of 25kg rice), is scheduled to arrive at the Freeport of Monrovia on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Additional consignments (batches 2, 3, 4, and 5) are expected between October and November 2025, based on the estimated times of arrival provided by shipping vessels.
This generous contribution was first announced during a bilateral meeting between His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, and His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia, held on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) on September 6, 2024.
The Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC), chaired by the Minister of Commerce and Industry with the Chairperson of the Liberia Rice Committee serving as Vice Chairperson, will receive and manage the consignment. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, together with the MSC, has pledged transparent and efficient oversight to ensure the rice reaches its intended beneficiaries.
Officials described the donation as a timely intervention to stabilize the rice market and support the government’s broader food security initiatives.
The Government of Liberia expressed profound gratitude to the Government and people of China for their continued friendship and cooperation.
“This contribution is a testament to the strong partnership between our two nations and will significantly aid Liberia in addressing its food security challenges,” the Ministry stated.
In response, the Chinese Embassy near Monrovia reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to Liberia, noting:
“China is proud to support Liberia’s food security efforts with this rice, a symbol of our lasting friendship and strong partnership. Together, we grow.”
