2025 Marathon Race Receives High Accolade

ADNews-Monrovia, Liberia: The 2025 edition of the Liberia Marathon has concluded with resounding success, as hundreds of runners from Liberia and around the world showcased their endurance, determination, and passion for athletics.

This year’s race,the seventh edition of the event,featured several categories, including the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K Foot Race, and 10K Wheelchair/Crutches race.

ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML), a platinum sponsor and one of the nation’s leading corporate supporters of sports development, commended the organizers and participants for staging yet another inspiring event.

Through its Chief Executive Officer, Michiel Van Der Merwe, AML praised the Liberia Marathon Trust for its professionalism, community engagement, and continued commitment to youth empowerment through athletics.

“ArcelorMittal wants to congratulate all of the runners for yet another beautiful competition. We thank the organizers for a job well done, and again, congratulations to all. ArcelorMittal is proud to be a prime sponsor,” Van Der Merwe stated.

“We applaud every runner, volunteer, and organizer who helped make this event a success.”

AML reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote national unity, youth development, and community well-being through sports.

Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu, lauded the event, describing it as a testament to the nation’s growing participation and competitiveness in athletics.

“This year, at the Japan Olympics, Liberian athletes were there. That tells you Liberia is getting there,” Minister Bangalu said. “We want to congratulate all of the sponsors for their contributions.”

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Liberia, Ambassador Nona Deprez, also hailed the marathon as one of the most positive and unifying events held in Monrovia.

“The EU loves the Liberia Marathon and remains proud to support it. This event brings people together through health, hope, and shared purpose,” she said.

Held under the theme “Healthy Cities, Healthy Lives,” the marathon highlighted the importance of public health, physical fitness, and community spirit—celebrating strength, endurance, and unity across the nation.

In the men’s full marathon, Sierra Leone’s Amadu Sajor Samura stole the spotlight with an outstanding performance that drew cheers from thousands of spectators. His compatriots Kalie Sesay and Abubakar Contec completed a Sierra Leonean sweep of the top three positions—underscoring West Africa’s growing dominance in long-distance running.

Liberian runners also performed impressively, with Marcoa Sacrie Lok, Emmanuel Dahn, and Corace N. Diggor finishing strong and earning praise from local supporters for their tenacity and resilience.

In the 10K category, Suech S. Makko of Liberia emerged victorious, while Moses Sacror Lok and Tomas Mulbach of JFK Hospital dominated the wheelchair division. The crutches race winner, Emmanuel Ngume, received a standing ovation for his courage and endurance—earning admiration as a symbol of strength and possibility.

The French Business Club, another long-standing partner of the marathon, described the event as “a celebration of partnership and human strength.”

Event Coordinator Magdalene Saah expressed gratitude to all sponsors and partners, including ArcelorMittal Liberia and international organizations, for their unwavering support.

“Every runner who starts and finishes is a champion,” Saah said. “The Liberia Marathon is not just about crossing the finish line,it’s about courage, community, and connection.”
