MoGCSP Condemns Surge in Domestic Violence

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has expressed deep concern over the escalating cases of domestic violence targeting women and girls nationwide.

Of particular distress are two recent incidents that have shocked the nation. In one tragic occurrence, an elderly woman succumbed to injuries sustained from a brutal assault and subsequently passed away at ELWA Hospital. In another appalling incident, a woman was reportedly set on fire in Gbarpolu County.

MoGCSP unequivocally condemns the despicable actions leading to the tragic demise of Ma. Theresa Bloh Cumeh, emphasizes that such acts of violence undermine Liberia’s commitment to eradicating all forms of violence against women, children, the vulnerable, and persons with disabilities.

Reports indicate that Ma. Theresa was viciously attacked by residents of the Chocolate City Community under baseless accusations of witchcraft before being rushed to ELWA Hospital, where she later died.

Expressing profound concern, the Ministry calls upon all Liberians across the nation’s 15 counties to renew their dedication to creating a safer environment for women and children.

Liberia, as a signatory to international agreements, is bound to uphold the rights of all citizens regardless of gender or social status.

While combating rape and violence against women and children remains a formidable challenge, the Ministry emphasizes that safeguarding the rights and safety of women and children cannot be overstated. The prevalence of mob justice and unjust discrimination against innocent women contradicts the vision of a hospitable Liberia.

These distressing incidents occur amidst global efforts to empower women, highlighting the urgency of addressing such injustices.

The Ministry extends heartfelt condolences to the families affected by these tragedies.

In light of these events, MoGCSP urges the Ministry of Justice to promptly initiate thorough investigations, ensuring that justice is served by Liberian law. The Ministry pledges to collaborate closely with MoJ until the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all Liberians, particularly women and children, and calls upon the entire nation to unite in condemning such heinous acts.
