Young Pledges Relief Amid Rice Price Crisis

In an effort to stabilize the soaring price of rice in Liberia, prominent businessman Saah Young has vowed to import 50 containers of rice within the next month. This commitment follows his recent recognition as the most influential businessman of the first quarter of 2024 by Nation Media Incorporated, which awarded him a Certificate of Honor.

Expressing empathy for the struggles faced by Liberians due to the recent surge in rice prices, which was condemned by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Young stated, “I feel the pain of the Liberian people.” He emphasized his dedication to addressing the crisis by committing to sell his imported rice below US$17 per 25 KG bag, a significant reduction aimed at countering what he describes as exploitation by foreign merchants. “Foreigners are exploiting the Liberian people on the price of rice,” he asserted.

Rice is a staple food in Liberia, and the recent price hike has led to widespread concern among citizens, intensifying calls for immediate action to stabilize the market. Young, who is also a major supplier of onions, Irish potatoes, and sardines, has pledged to confront the current market prices and support efforts to ensure a steady supply of rice at a reasonable cost.

Young revealed that his plan to import rice dates back to the administration of President George Weah. However, he alleged that former Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs denied him permission, accusing her of hindering the growth of Liberian-owned businesses. He noted that the 1080 metric tons soon to arrive in the country mark the beginning of his efforts to import this staple food.

As the issue of stabilizing rice price continues to strain the Liberian populace, Young’s initiative is seen as a beacon of hope. His commitment to importing affordable rice is expected to provide much-needed relief and stabilize prices in the market, alleviating the economic burden on many families.

Known for his humanitarian gestures, Saah Young has committed himself to continuing these efforts to support the community during this challenging time.
