–Says, He’s A Champion of Women’s Cause in Liberia
The pro-youth advocacy group, Youth United for Progress and Actions (YOPA) craves the women of Liberian to come out publicly and urge members of the House of Representatives of the incoming 55th Legislature to elect the outgoing Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa as the next Speaker.
YOPA, through its Chairman Diamond Walker with the approval of Board Chairman, Bobby W. Dixon, says though the women of Liberia in general (apart from those elected to the House of Representatives) have no voting rights in the Legislature regarding the Speakership election in January 2024, but as mothers of the nation they can persuade their children who will be serving in 55th Legislature to vote their colleague, Cllr. Koffa, who has been a champion for women’s rights in Liberia.
The youth group recalls Deputy Speaker Koffa played a primary role in the Domestic Violence Law that was passed in Liberia, while he also primarily introduced the Female Genitals Mutilation (FGM) Bill, which engendered local and international partners eventual ensuring that FGM, as a practice, is on the way to elimination and eradication in Liberia. YOPA also notes that Cllr. Koffa, as a lawmaker in the 54th Legislature co-sponsored a number of developmental initiatives both in his Grand Kru constituents and Liberia at large.
YOPA says, it is of the belief if the women of Liberian add their voices to other pro-democratic and governance groups, civil society organizations, student groups, as well as over 50% of the incoming 55th Legislature who have publicly endorsed Cllr. Koffa’s speakership bid, the erudite jurist and lawmaker will get the blessing of his colleagues to elect him as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 55th Legislature.
YOPA reiterates to the women of Liberia that Cllr. Koffa is an experienced public servant imbued with distinctions. As for his political role, he served as Minister of State without Portfolio and Special Prosecutor of the Sable Mining Bribery scandal case. A few months later, he was appointed legal counsel to the President of Liberia. Cllr. Koffa resigned in late July 2017 to participate in the Presidential and legislative elections as a candidate for the Representative seat in Grand Kru County District #2. On October 19, he was declared the winner of that electoral process, and in 2021, he was subsequently elected as Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature of the Republic of Liberia. On October 10, 2023, he was re-elected as Representative of Grand Kru Country Electoral District #2 after serving his kinsmen of his county with diligence.
As a lawyer, he is the founder and Managing Partner of the International Law Group (ILG), and he has been practicing law since 1997, both in Liberia and the United States of America. Cllr. Koffa was also admitted into the Supreme Court Bar of the Republic of Liberia with distinct honour as valedictorian of the graduating class.
According to YOPA, Cllr. Koffa’s leadership role is immaculate. Deputy House Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa is a former Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives of the 54th Legislature. He was a member of the Committee on Elections and Inauguration and the Committee on Human & Civil Rights.
YOPA is of the belief and persuasion that Cllr. Koffa is a profound political leader adept in the science and art of constituent representation, an embodiment that he will take to the Speakership when elected by his colleagues in January 2024.
