Today, March 5, 2024, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung of Liberia welcomed the United States delegation for Global Criminal Justice, led by Ambassador-At-Large Her Excellency Beth Van Schaack, at his office on Capitol Hill.
The meeting centered on the progress toward establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia. The delegation commended Liberia’s peaceful transfer of power and its strides in enhancing democratic credentials.
Ambassador Schaack highlighted President Boakai’s commitment to the court in his inaugural address, aligning with the United States’ agenda to bolster the rule of law and end impunity in Liberia. She emphasized that the court would handle significant cases based on the severity of offenses, drawing on Sierra Leone’s example where nine individuals were prosecuted. She reiterated the US government’s support, pledging technical and financial assistance for the court’s establishment.
In response, Vice President Koung expressed gratitude for the US government’s ongoing support for peace, stability, and national development. He affirmed President Boakai’s leadership in Liberia’s foreign policy and pledged his unwavering support for the President’s agenda.
“The vision and wisdom of President Boakai guide us, and I am fully committed to advancing his agenda for Liberia,” Vice President Koung assured the US delegation.
He stressed the importance of impartial prosecution and broad-based consultations to prevent selective justice.
The US delegation is slated to engage in discussions with His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., as well as top government officials and civil society organizations.
