PUL raises Concerns

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is deeply concerned about a complaint of threats made against one of its full members, Mr. Malcolm Scott.

Journalist Scott, former Interim Vice President of the Reporters Association, Republic of Liberia, and former Secretary General of the Legislative Press Pool, disclosed that since issuing two separate statements from his office regarding a Rice Trucking scandal, apprehension of illegal firearms, and more, he has been threatened by unknown individuals.

According to him, these individuals have threatened his life, stating, “we will take away your life since you think you have a loud enough mouth to speak about things regarding the Port that are beyond you.” Scott, who is the Communications Director of the National Port Authority (NPA), has formally lodged a complaint with the PUL.

In response, the PUL expressed serious dismay over the act of threatening Mr. Malcolm Scott, who is simply performing his duties and should not be targeted for doing so. The Press Union of Liberia urges those threatening Mr. Scott to cease such actions immediately.

The PUL is concerned about the safety and protection of Malcolm Scott, who is not only a journalist by profession but also the Communications Director of the NPA. The union requests the Liberia National Police and the government of Liberia to ensure his well-being and safety.

In a public alert issued by Malcolm Scott regarding his and his family’s personal safety, he emphasized that spokesperson duties and responsibilities should not be a death sentence for any professional. He warned those threatening him that they will be held accountable for their actions, urging them to face him directly rather than resorting to cowardly tactics.

Scott highlighted his nearly decade-long journey in corporate communications and emphasized the importance of his security and his family’s safety. He stated that he will not tolerate any further pressure or threats and has made a decision to address the situation firmly.

The Press Union of Liberia stands in solidarity with Malcolm Scott and calls for swift action to ensure his safety and the protection of journalists carrying out their duties in the country.
