Representative Rugie Yatu Barry of Montserrado County’s District #1 has announced plans to upgrade various health facilities within her district. Emphasizing her commitment to health as a top priority, she highlighted her administration’s significant progress in addressing the deteriorating conditions and medication shortages in local health centers.

During a recent meeting with over 250 community leaders and stakeholders in Bentol City, Representative Barry detailed her efforts to secure a substantial increase in funding for the Bensonville Hospital. “Upon reviewing the draft National Budget, I saw only US$25,000 allocated to Bensonville Hospital. I lobbied with   my colleagues at Capitol Hill and succeeded in raising the amount to US$200,000,” she stated.

The meeting focused on the allocation and utilization of the US$100,000 designated as the District Development Fund in the National Budget. Representative Barry convened this dialogue with citizens, local community leaders, and the District Development Council to determine which projects should be implemented by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) using these funds.

LACE, established under the Community Empowerment Act pursuant to Chapter 50B of Title 12 of the Liberian Code of Laws as of July 22, 2004, aims to improve living standards in poor communities. The agency strengthens basic social services and promotes community-based approaches to project identification, preparation, implementation, administration, and maintenance. Although LACE does not directly implement community sub-projects, it collaborates with communities and other bodies to enhance their technical and managerial capabilities.

At the meeting, leaders from Todee and Careysburg, the two statutory districts within Montserrado County District #1, unanimously identified various community projects. These projects were submitted to Representative Barry’s office for consideration. Barry assured the citizens of her full support and commitment to their needs, emphasizing that the district’s development funds will be utilized according to the community’s decisions.

“We have two statutory districts, Todee and Careysburg, and we have decided on the projects to be implemented by LACE,” Barry confirmed, signaling her dedication to advancing the district’s development through community-driven initiatives.

This move reflects Representative Barry’s ongoing efforts to address the critical health and developmental challenges faced by the residents of District #1 and to ensure that the allocated funds are effectively used for the district’s benefit.
