The pro-democracy, governance and advocacy institution, Movement for Promotion of Non-Violence Elections in Liberia (MOPNEL) foresees the international connections of Deputy Speaker of the 54th Legislature, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa will be another strong pillar on which members of the incoming 55th Legislature will elect their colleague as the next Speaker in January 2024.
In a press statement issued in Brewerville City, outside Monrovia on Tuesday 12 December 2023, and signed by its Executive Director Bobby W. Dixon, MOPNEL believes Cllr. Koffa’s enormous works ethics and desire to always achieve and make impact in the lives of Liberians, as well as move the growth and development of Liberia to another level from the legislative standpoint are tendencies international partners recognize in those who do business with in a democratic setting.
With the ongoing United States of America Treasury Department Office for Assets Control’s targeted sanctions being imposed on current and former Liberian government officials as a result of abuse of office, corruption, human rights abuses and perpetration of violence in Liberia over the years, MOPNEL is proud of Cllr. Koffa, for being recognized internationally in his fight and passage for the rights of Liberian women in his advocacy for the Gender Rights Bill.
MOPNEL records that Cllr. Koffa was lauded by the Regional UN Woman Ambassador for Africa, Madam Jaha Dukureh, over his efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Liberia. She praised him for being a significant player in the Legislature for championing bills in the interest of women, including the bill to outlaw the practices of FGM.
In recent days, MOPNEL has reportedly learned that Deputy Speaker Koffa has been invited by international partners and some high-profile US government officials for consultative engagements in his bid for Speakership of the 55th Legislature slated for January 2024. MOPNEL is of the belief that Cllr. Koffa may have been invited due to his positive stance in the fight and promotion of human rights, as well as rejection of violence in the democratic space of Liberia. These attributes are cardinal to democracy in Liberia, MOPNEL adds.
Concluding, MOPNEL thru its Executive Director, Bobby W. Dixon has once again called on members of the incoming 55th Legislature to candidly listen to their constituents’ appeals to elect their colleague, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa as the next Speaker of the 55th Legislature due to him not limiting his work only to his native Grand Kru County but rather serves as a lawmaker without border who provides services to the people of Liberia irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliations.
