Calls for Contract Review
The Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) bring to light America’s exploitation of Liberia, orchestrated through a deceitful scheme with the Liberia International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), siphoning off multimillion-dollar revenues. Operating under the guise of representing the Liberian Shipping Registry from the USA, LISCR controls Liberia’s registry operations without a single Liberian employed.
It is disheartening that LISCR, in its contract with the Liberian government, insists solely on employing American citizens within the Liberian registry, thus stifling employment opportunities for Liberians. This blatant discrimination underscores a nefarious intent to deprive Liberians of job prospects, perpetrated by individuals who have no place in the new Liberia.
The EFFL asserts that no foreign entity should wield absolute control over investments meant to benefit the Liberian populace. Alarming reports reveal LISCR’s fraudulent activities, exploiting its position to withhold crucial tax revenue from the nation, accruing billions of dollars while depriving the government and citizens of rightful income.
According to their press release, since its inception under the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, LISCR has profited immensely while operating without any Liberian oversight or involvement. The EFFL says it has credible allegations indicating LISCR’s expansion beyond its agreed-upon scope, facilitating unauthorized business dealings under the Liberian flag outside the maritime sector.
LISCR’s operations have resulted in significant losses for Liberia, with the government receiving only a fraction of the revenue generated, despite LISCR’s annual earnings surpassing $200 million. This exploitation has hindered Liberia’s economic growth and denied its citizens opportunities for prosperity.
“Despite an initial contract amendment in 2014, extending LISCR’s tenure until 2029, the current administration must reassess this agreement to ensure Liberia’s interests are safeguarded. The lack of Liberian representation in LISCR’s operations raises concerns about transparency and accountability, necessitating immediate action from the government,” the release stated.
The EFFL calls upon the United States to collaborate with Liberia’s government in investigating LISCR’s activities to ascertain their sincerity. Transparency is paramount, especially concerning the distribution of revenue between LISCR and the Liberian government.
Liberia’s economic aspirations hinge on fair partnerships that prioritize its citizens’ welfare. By revising the LISCR agreement, Liberia can reclaim control over its maritime resources and pave the way for sustainable development in crucial sectors like electricity and agriculture.
Furthermore, rumors surrounding secret extensions of the LISCR contract underscore the urgency for transparency and accountability in governmental dealings. The EFFL urges the current administration to either renegotiate the contract terms or initiate a competitive bidding process to ensure fairness and transparency.
In light of Liberia’s economic potential, it is imperative to rectify the injustices perpetuated by entities like LISCR, safeguarding Liberia’s sovereignty and fostering equitable partnerships for national prosperity.
