The Government of Liberia has taken decisive action to address the plight of approximately 1600 Liberians currently residing in Ghana as a high-level delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Cllr. Jeddi Armah, Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs, and officials from the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), has been dispatched to Ghana for collaborative efforts.

Since the onset of the crisis on February 26, 2024, the Liberian Embassy in Ghana has been in constant dialogue with the Ghana Refugee Board and other relevant authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has chaired a stakeholders’ meeting to strategize solutions for the affected Liberians.

Out of the 1600 affected individuals, approximately 1539 have expressed their desire to be repatriated to Liberia. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has pledged his support to facilitate the necessary modalities for their smooth return.

Reflecting on the events of February, wherein shelters of nearly 8000 West African nationals, including Liberians, were demolished at Buduburam in Ghana, leaving them vulnerable, the Liberian Government is determined to ensure the safe return of its citizens.

Regrettably, legal proceedings have been initiated seeking eviction of the Liberians from a school within their refuge.

In response, the Liberian Embassy is actively pursuing a peaceful, out-of-court resolution, while the LRRRC progresses with repatriation plans. The Deputy Minister of Legal Affairs of Foreign Affairs will engage in dialogue with Ghanaian counterparts to foster a peaceful resolution. The aim is to have all Liberians wishing to return home safely within Liberian borders by the end of April.

The Liberian Government remains committed to the welfare and safe repatriation of its citizens, urging Ghanaian authorities to provide utmost support. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has reached out to the Ghanaian Embassy in Monrovia for diplomatic assistance in resolving all outstanding matters.

Together, Liberia and Ghana are working towards a solution that prioritizes human welfare and international cooperation.
