After numerous protests led by the citizens of Grand Cape Mount County, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals while demanding that the Bea Mountain Mining Company Cooperation (BMMC) fulfill its full social corporate responsibilities, legislative findings on the BMMC’s activities have proven that the Company lied under oath.
During the Company’s Authority appearance at the Legislature to answer questions about the cause of the persistent protests by the citizens of the county, it told the members of the 55th Legislature that they are providing adequate medical services, piped water, a standard education system, among others. However, the legislative findings led by Montserrado County District #10 Lawmaker, Rep. Yekeh Kolubah, have proven them wrong.
Contrary to the Company’s assertion, Rep. Kolubah and his team have uncovered that citizens working with the company are living below the poverty line, lacking healthcare, and jobs meant for locals are given to foreigners, specifically “Turkish,” while the company is in flagrant violation of labor laws.
“The company’s Country Manager, Debar Allen, must go. He lied under oath to the Honorable House of the Legislature that everything is okay with the workers,” stated Rep. Kolubah.
“They lied to us that they have running water, a clinic for citizens, but nothing like that is here. Look at what is happening here, it’s too bad. The foreigners are working in the kitchen, driving company trucks, fixing tea, and producing mineral water for the senior staff, doing what the citizens are capable of doing,” Rep. Kolubah narrated.
As a result of his findings, the Montserrado County District #10 Lawmaker vows to rally support to demand the company pays for damages and takes their full social responsibilities or face closure of their operations and expulsion from the country.
The company’s poor labor practices have escalated tensions among citizens, leading to several protests, resulting in the disappearance of two National Police officers, damaging several properties, and the killing of citizens in the county.
