The African Youth Peer Review Committee (AYPRC) vehemently denounces the groundless accusations levied by GNNLiberia newspaper against recent protesters of the Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC).
In their recent press stamens, they noted that claims insinuating that the protestors act solely out of self-interest, rather than in the best interests of their communities, lack substance and credibility.
“ Should GNN doubt the validity of the protestors’ claims, two viable options exist: firstly, to review the BMMC’s Mineral Development Agreement (MDA), and secondly, to verify the erroneous assertions it published, substantiating social and economic contributions to communities affected by the BMMC operations in Grand Cape Mount County”, they said.
According to them, absent are operational vocational training centers or opportunities, with only an ill-equipped building present; no 24-hour healthcare center with emergency ambulance services; no worker housing in the designated “Company Town”; no established plans facilitating local suppliers to engage in business with the mine, as BMMC conducts all procurement locally and offshore, contributing little to no in-country payments to suppliers. Moreover, unskilled job opportunities, ostensibly reserved for Liberians, are being usurped by foreign nationals.
The statement maintained that it is paramount to underscore the citizens’ rights to peaceful protest and expression of concerns regarding their well-being and that of their communities, deserving of respect and protection. Dismissing the protestors’ actions as mere self-serving pursuits without a thorough investigation and consideration of their grievances is unjust.
“We implore the newly nominated Lands, Mines, and Energy Minister, Hon. Wilmolt Paye, to conduct a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the concerns raised by the protestors. Transparent and equitable resolution of community members’ issues in Kinjor and other affected areas within Grand Cape Mount is imperative.
All involved parties are urged to engage in constructive dialogue, seeking amicable resolutions that prioritize community well-being while upholding principles of justice and accountability. The voices of the people must be heeded and respected in any decision-making process affecting their livelihoods and rights,” the explained.
The African Youth Peer Review Committee emphasized that it stands in solidarity with the protestors, advocating for a just resolution to the pertinent issues. Emphasis is placed on upholding the rule of law, fostering transparency, and advancing inclusive development for the benefit of all members of society.
