Providence Island In Desperate Need

The Assistant Minister Designate for Culture Affairs at the Ministry of Information Culture Affairs and Tourism has hit the ground running in  mobilizing support to revamp the historical Providence Island ahead of the  Unification Day celebration slated for next month .

During his tour of the Island accompanied by the Culture Ambassador, Queen Juli Endee after  the heavy storm that caused several damages  including the demolition of the theater and other structure at the facility,  Minister Designate Paul  called on their International  partners, Government and local partners to provide them a helping hands to have the site  refurbished  to  standard than ever before to prevent any reocurrence of  controllable natural disaster.

Their tour started from the theater  which was destroyed by the storm and later followed by the visit at the monument  of a ship that brought in settlers   where they  met the indigenous about 200 years ago. 

Speaking with journalists over the weekend on the Island, Minister Designate, J. Rufus Paul  highlighted how the recent  storm  destroyed certain components of the infrastructure. “As you are aware that there is an ongoing plan for our   Unification Day program in May and  this is the  destination  we usually   celebrate the day, it’s so devastating to  see the facility in such a deplorable state”, he emphasized.

He is calling on their partners to urgently come to their aid  in order to enable them to have a Unification Day  Celebration on the historic site inline with the norm and tradition.

Even though the minister  designate confirmed  being  cash-trapped,  but hoping that some partners will join them in the soonest possible time  to have the facility renovated ahead of the Unification.

The Liberian Culture Ambassador, Queen  Julie Endee who is on the planning committee of this year’s Unification Day Celebration   added that  when the  theater is in good shape and decorated, it symbolizes their foundation of the national culture heritage.

She however assured that for the cleaning aspect of the facility, her team is fully in charge to do their best.

Her major concern remains  the support from their partners to have the facility in a perfect shape with the hope  that partners will join them in achieving their goal.

Queen Juli applauds the energy and collaboration from the Information Minister and Designate Assistant Culture Affairs Minister for the level of work they have been doing over the period of time.

The Unification Day is a traditional event which they normally  celebrate on the historic Providence Island as it is a destination where the setting reunited with the indigenous over 200 years ago.

Providence Island is a former trade post and the first arrival point of freed American Slaves. The site is characterized by a cement pillar and concrete floor believed to be the `first Concrete work in the history of the country, an ancient water well and an old landing docking platform for incoming canoes and ships.
